Sun-Powered Success in Gutu: A Rural Clinic’s Bright Future

The newly installed solar system at Murisa Clinic in Gutu, Masvingo province, is more than just an energy upgrade—it’s a lifeline. Before the switch, Nurse Matare often worked by a paraffin lamp during power cuts, praying critical equipment didn’t fail. “We lost so many vaccine doses because the main refrigerator would go down,” she recalls. “It was heartbreaking.”

Now, with a reliable solar-powered cold chain and consistent lighting, the clinic can safely store temperature-sensitive medicines and offer night-time maternity services without fear. Local resident, Amai Ruvarashe, whose baby was safely delivered last week, shared her relief. “The light was steady. It felt professional and safe. Our clinic is no longer in the dark ages.” The success has prompted the provincial medical directorate to earmark two more remote clinics for similar solar installations by year-end.
