Local Hero Surgeon Rejects International Offer to Lead New Trauma Unit

In a surprising move, celebrated orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Elias Shumba (38) has declined a lucrative consultancy position in the UK to spearhead the opening of a new, state-of-the-art trauma unit at Parirenyatwa General Hospital. Dr. Shumba, a graduate of the University of Zimbabwe’s College of Health Sciences, stated, “The call to serve my people is stronger than the lure of a foreign paycheck.”

His decision comes amid a persistent ‘brain drain’ where many highly skilled Zimbabwean health professionals leave for better-paying jobs abroad. The new trauma unit, funded by a diaspora investment group, is set to significantly improve response times for road traffic accident victims, a long-standing challenge for the country’s main referral hospitals. “This unit is a sign that things can change here,” Dr. Shumba added at the press briefing. “I want to be part of that change.”
